Weeks 1–2
Pain
Turn the volume down.
Hands-on work at the base of your skull and along the neck settles the guarding muscles and takes pressure off an irritated nerve, starting your first visit.
What We Treat
You turn with your whole body now, because your head stopped going that far. It is fixable, and it starts with a cause-first evaluation: we find what is pulling on your neck before anything gets treated.

Why It Happens
Necks don’t tighten at random. It is usually a few things stacked together. A head that sits slightly forward of your shoulders all day, so the muscles at the base of your skull never clock out. Small joints in the neck that stopped gliding and handed their work to the muscles around them. A nerve root that got crowded, which is where the pins and needles in your arm come from. And a mid back that has stopped rotating, so your neck does all the turning for both.
You are the one everyone else checks in with. Which is exactly why nobody has checked your neck. A cause-first evaluation sorts out which of those is actually driving yours, and that matters: the fix for a crowded nerve is not the fix for a stiff joint. It is also why rest works for a weekend and then quits, and why a printed stretching sheet can make an irritated nerve angrier. Find the driver and the plan gets obvious.
The Honest Truth
Nobody regrets starting too early. Every week, someone in our clinic says they regret waiting.
How We Fix It
Every plan has an endpoint. Here’s what Pain, Prime, Perform and Prevent look like for neck pain.
Weeks 1–2
Pain
Hands-on work at the base of your skull and along the neck settles the guarding muscles and takes pressure off an irritated nerve, starting your first visit.
Weeks 2–6
Prime
Joint mobility work at the stiff segments, plus mid back rotation, so your neck stops doing all the turning by itself.
Weeks 6–10
Perform
Deep neck and shoulder blade strengthening, so your head stays upright through a full workday without help.
Weeks 10+
Prevent
We set up your desk, your driving position and your pillow, then test the whole thing under a normal week: that’s the endpoint, not another appointment.
I came here as a result of a car accident… for my neck, upper back and shoulder. Right away, I can feel the level of care by Jewel asking specific questions about how exactly I injured the areas, taking everything into account to provide the best treatment with minimal pain, if at all… This office and this staff have felt so incredibly welcoming and goal-driven compared to the first clinic I went to. Light and day difference.

Questions, Answered
Usually neither. California lets you see a licensed physical therapist without a physician referral, so nothing has to happen before you come in. Neck X-rays and MRIs also show wear and tear in plenty of people who have no pain at all, so a scan often does not name the cause. We start with a cause-first evaluation, and if imaging turns out to be genuinely necessary, we help you get it.
It is a fair worry, and the answer is no when the movement is chosen for your neck specifically. Complete rest leaves a neck stiffer and weaker, which sets up the next flare-up. We find the directions that calm your symptoms and start there, one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist, then add load only as the nerve settles. You are never handed a sheet and left to guess.
You get a plan with an endpoint instead of an open tab of appointments. Your neck moves through the four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform and Prevent, and at every visit you know which phase you are in and what is left. How long that takes depends on how long it has been going on and whether a nerve is involved, so we give you the answer after the evaluation rather than guessing before it.
